Minutes of the February 2009 Membership Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 7:15PM by Jeff Thompson
There were only ten members in attendance as some folks probably stayed home due to the Winter storm that passed through ealier in the day. The only officers present were the president and vice-president. No reports from the treasurer or membership coordinator.
Old business
Jeff Thompson spoke about our efforts to increase membership but there really wasn't anything new to report.
New business
Ben Hocker spoke about the meeting he attended with Larry Sorenson and officers of the Third Dimension Radio Control (3DRC). The meeting turned out to be quite productive. It was the first time that members of each club met in person. The initial discussion was focused on getting to know each other and understanding how each club intended to use the field. Very little details were discussed aside from frequency control.
It is looking like frequency control will be managed through a board that will be erected near the flight line of the 3DRC field. MRCSS members will need to stop there and leave some kind of card (does not have to be an AMA card or MRCSS card) with a cell phone number before proceeding the the field where the sailplanes will be launched.
Ben noted that both clubs are committed to working together to develop plans that will allow both clubs to fly at Elk River. The 3DRC folks also mentioned that they would like to host a thermal duration contest for us this Summer. Look for more news to come as the flying season arrives and additional meetings are held.
Ben was also in contact with the land owner of the Elk River fields and they also had a very pleasant conversation. He introduced himself as the MRCSS contact for 2009 and explained that we were already working with 3DRC to develop a plan for shared use of the airspace which he was happy to hear. It is sounded like most of the fields are planted and we should have many options for flying when the ground dries up.
Kevin Kavaney brought up the subject of having Jim Porter visit us for another building/repair seminar. There seems to be interest in having folks get together for another one of these sessions, but we are not sure where the event could be held. Kevin will follow up on a couple of leads to see if a suitable location can be found. If so we will try to pin down a date at the next meeting.
