Minutes of MRCSS meeting January 18, 2007

Meeting Agenda for Jan.18, 7 p.m.
Edina Public Library, Ethel Berry Room 24 members present

NEXT MEETING: FEBRUARY 15, 7 P.M. EDINA LIBRARY

CURRENT BUSINESS

Meeting was called to order by President Ib Jensen.

Greg Stinson read a letter sent the club by the Gunderson family, owners of the Stanton area hill we often use for slope soaring. The Gundersons thanked us for our Christmas gift and said they would happily have us fly our gliders from that site in 2007. The discussion that followed was a brief consideration of flying conditions at our several slope sites. All sites appear to be in reasonably good condition except Mounds Park. It is undergoing tree planting that may force us to reconsider its use.

On a related topic, we were reminded that the next slope trip to the South Dakota site is scheduled for May 17-20.

Slope discussion concluded with a reminder that the “fabulous” Lake Wilson, Kansas, slope fun-fly and competition will be held again this summer.

NEW BUSINESS

Bill Rakozy announced that he is forming one or more teams of glider flyers from Minnesota and adjoining states that might like to learn the skills of cross-country flying and, perhaps, eventually compete in a national contest. He invited those interested to see him. There was further talk of possibly setting up a regional CC contest (in Albert Lea? or Oshkosh?) The discussion turned to some of the details of such flying. Then a pertinent question emerged : What is the legal altitude limit for RC flying? After several conflicting answers were given, Bill R. volunteered to call the AMA and to report back next meeting.

Next item was a series of comments aimed at expanding the range of our club TD contests. All agreed it would be great to trip to Soaring events in Michigan or Iowa or Chicago in hopes that their flyers might respond by coming to Minnesota to compete here and give a bit more zest to our competitions.

President Ib then checked-off the list of club appointments:

  • Paul Jacobson : membership supervisor
  • Dave Engleson : public relations
  • Larry Sorenson : guardian of the club-owned flight trainers
  • Bob Waldridge : ambassador

We began setting the dates and CDs for summer 07 thermal flying. Here is the tentative calendar:

Larry announced that Jim Porter, one of the great pros, now living in Iowa, is willing to visit with club members in the Spring. He would provide a kind of show-and-tell of his planes, discuss repair techniques and a Q&A session with those interested. We were reminded of the large RC flyers auction to be held in Richfield, St. Peter’s, on Saturday, February 10. Planes, radios, parts, etc.

SHOW AND TELL

that concluded our meeting included three
interesting displays:
Ed Berris showed a newly molded P-40 fuselage for sloper/electric.
Dave Engleson showed part of the scale model he is building.
Ib Jensen showed and explained the clever means he had used to repair the
fractured fuselages of two composite fuselages.
This lively, even fun-filled meeting ended at 8:30

Respectfully submitted,
Vern Bailey, Secretary
