February 2005 Meeting Minutes

PDF

Minutes of the Minnesota Radio Control Soaring Society meeting Feb. 17- 2005

CALL TO ORDER

34 members present

At 7 p.m. President Augie McKibben called the meeting to order and invited three visitors to introduce themselves. Wayne Johnson, Dale Johnson, and Craig Greening responded, each explaining his experience as a model builder and flyer of either power aircraft or park flyers.

OLD BUSINESS

Treasurer Jack Perecman announced we now have $1,408 in the club account. Continuing payment of membership dues should raise this. Before tonight, 24 had paid up. As of now, 37 total have paid. Six members agreed to serve as on an informal "membership posse". They will divide up the task of telephoning unpaid members and urging them to renew.

Ed Berris brought us up-to-date on the frequency board project and passed out kits to those who volunteered to bring their board to each flying site they attend to help avoid frequency clashes.

Augie McKibben reported for the Mirage building project that meets evenings every other week at the Washburn high school. Augie is giving lessons in building excellence as he leads six of us through the process of putting together a "woodie" sailplane.

NEW BUSINESS

Bert Olsen and Jim Ladwig explained the need for moderators on our Yahoo website.

Dates for 2005 slope trips to South Dakota were announced. Trips are being formed for May 12 and dates during July and September. Possibly April?

CD Bill Rakozy passed out copies of the 2005 Thermal Duration contests to be held each month from May 21st through September 17. The schedule is posted on another page.

There followed some discussion of a separate 1.5 meter all "woodie"TD contest suggested by Mark Miller. Consensus reached: This will not be a separate event but will either be integrated into the established contest as determined by each Contest Director or else created impromptu by an agreeable bunch of guys.

At this point we paused for a raffle of several valued building accessories. Tickets sold for $1 each. Lots of fun and several lucky guys.

SHOW AND TELL

Larry Sorenson's huge TELEMASTER tow plane -- a 20 pound behemoth powered by a 4-cycle engine, was the evening's star. Beautifully built, ready to tow.

Dave Edmondson showed us his THERMAL PROBE, the super-lite 1.5 meter ARF glider from the Ukrainian craftsmen. To be launched discus-style or with a lite-weight hi-start (Hobby Lobby sells same).

Dave Goebel showed his Mountain Models DL-50 foam flyer.

Dave Engleson explained he is building a foam semi-scale Rhineland 1.9 meter foam.

Emil Weiler described his method of using Goop to seal and strengthen a slope-soarer's fuse.

Jack Percman displayed his elegant and collapsible tripod base stand custom made for his elegant Sharon.

The meeting concluded with members clustered around Greg Stewart as he demonstrated the art of soldering together an NiMH battery pack.
