Minutes of the February 16, 2006 MRCSS meeting
21 present, Edina Public Library
President Adam Koller called the meeting to order at 7p.m.
Two prospective members, Quinton Spears and Phil Columbo, were welcomed to our meeting.
First item for discussion: Thermal contest schedule for this year. Greg Stinson reported that he and Vern Bailey had set a tentative schedule:
- MAY13 -- SPRING TUNE UP at Farmington sod farm
- JUNE 17 -- SUMMER LIFT at Farmington sod farm
- JUNE 27 -- FUN FLY joined by MARCEE electric flyers - at Farmington
- JULY 15 & 16 -- THE BIG ONE at Elk River sod farm
- AUG. 12 -- LSF DOG DAYS at Farmington sod farm
- SEPT 9 -- FALL FINALE at Farmington sod farm
Members approved the schedule. Greg asked for volunteers who might serve as contest directors. Vern and Greg explained the need for a functional club winch for use at club events. Discussion of the servicing necessary to restore our old winch followed, and the club decided to use current funds to 1) purchase a turn-around assembly, 2) new winch line 3) new foot switch and 4) a reliable battery. Larry Sorenson volunteered to help repair the drag mechanism, and Bailey offered to store the winch, charge it and transport it to Farmington site club events. Offer accepted.
Ed Berris reminded all that membership dues of $40 would end on March 1. After that date, the fee is $50.
The club unanimously hailed the good work being done by Mike Glaser at our web site. Bravo, Mike.
Those meeting at Washburn High one evening a week for group construction of slope models report it has been a great success. Between 15-20 members have been present at each meeting.
A reminder was made that the next South Dakota slope flying extravaganza is scheduled for May 18-21.
The remaining half of the meeting was given to an excellent talk and demonstration by Rich Ness on essential information you will need to build and fly electric-powered sailplanes. Rich, an active member of the MARCEE club of electric flyers, provided detailed advice and then answered all our questions in a Q and A conclusion. Great stuff.
The meeting ended with a brief show-and-tell of "my favorite building tool" with 12 members explaining their choices.
In all, a lively, informative meeting.
Vern Bailey, secretary
