February 20th, 2003 MRCSS Meeting
Call to Order
Thirty-two members attended the February meeting along with two guests, Eric Anacleto and John Watkins. Eric Anacleto has recently moved here from California & John Watkins has a background in free flight. Thanks for joining us guys, we look forward to flying with you.
President Bill Rakozy welcomed everyone to the meeting, said a few words, and proceeded to check in with the officers.
Secretary - David Engleson stated that this year, besides taking meeting minutes, he would like to assist individuals in contributing to the club by telling their stories, documenting what they are doing in articles, presentations, and videos. By doing this we can inspire current club members and motivate others to participate. If you have any comments or suggestions for the January meeting minutes, let him know.
Treasurer - Jack Perecman stated that our current balance is $3,315.85. Jack went on to say that he enjoys walks on the beach, romantic dinners, and puppies.
Membership - Bob Waldridge reiterated that membership dues are $20 and 65 out of the 103 members have paid. Please give Bob a break and get your membership dues in promptly. Thanks. The current membership roster is posted on our web site under articles, roster, and password. Contact Bob for the password.
New Business
Intra-Club Fun Fly With MARCEE – Ed Berris stated that he would be contacting members of the Minnesota Area Radio Control Electric Enthusiasts (MARCEE) to discuss possible dates for an event this season. Dates that are being considered are May 31st and June 7th. Stay tuned for more information from the Ed.
Old Business
Ridgedale Library Open House – This event is scheduled for March 23rd, and more information will be posted soon. If you have planes, gizmos, or other items you wish to display at the event, contact Bill Rakozy.
F3J Event – Jack Perecman reported that he has had difficulty contacting and talking with the AMA staff about hosting the upcoming F3J event this summer. He added that the AMA said that 90% of the participants are from California and a good portion of the others from Colorado and Utah and the event would likely be held in that vicinity. Jack concluded by saying that this doesn’t mean that we have no chance of hosting the event, but it will be a long shot. The committee will file an application soon. Thanks Jack.
Field Safety Guidelines – Augie McKibben has posted the safety guidelines on our web page. Thanks for all the hard work Augie, Emil & ____. One question asked from the crowd was, “How can we transfer the rules we have on paper, into practice at the field?” The consensus was that if a contest crew in the case of a flying event, or first person at the field on any given day, set up the field according to the guidelines and conveys the plan to those who follow, the guidelines would soon become the ‘norm’. Make the effort to read the guidelines and make it happen. Thanks.
Launch Boss – Jack Perecman said that he will get the club winch in working order soon and look into organizing a winch-based or club high-start event this season. Jack sited similar flying events in Norway where multiple winches are used instead of hand-tow. Many club members have their own winches and club high-starts, and those present showed interest. Sounds good Jack, lets try this!
Spring Slope Trip to South Dakota and More – Emil Weiler discussed the upcoming slope trip to South Dakota scheduled for May 20-25th. Contact Emil if you plan to go, then contact Ed Berris & let him know your plans and the frequency of your radios you plan to bring with you. The boys have you covered. Emil went on to say that part of his ‘Slope King’ title includes being a slope mentor. If you have not tried slope flying and want to, or if you would like to learn more about sloping from an expert, contact Emil. Emil also has plans to schedule a slope event this year, tentatively scheduled for this fall at Hagar City. Maybe we can get some Fun-1 racing in
Web Site - Ro Hart mentioned that the old newsletters have been posted on our site, the logo updated, and the club roster has been posted as well. Ro has made great progress on the site so please check it out. Thanks for all of your hard work Ro.
Flying Site Committee - Bill Rakozy stated he has learned that the Fricke family has sold their sod farm north of Saint Paul and it looks as though the site will be developed this spring. The good news is that the Fricke’s have purchased land in Oseo and Maple Grove and flying on these new sod farms will “not be a problem”. Bill went on to say he would follow up by checking the adjacent properties, vehicle access, frequency checks, nearby airports, power lines, and Bon Jovi fans. A member in attendance asked, “If we lease the field, might we get exclusive rights to fly there?” Bill thought this was a good question for the owner and will follow up for us. Thanks Bill.
Show & Tell
Greg Stinson presented his Compu-Foil design program and how he used it to design the wing for his beautiful vintage sailplane. It is a very impressive project and the quality of workmanship is evident. We look forward to seeing it completed and in the air Greg! Thanks.

Tim Mattson presented his Vario. Hope I spelled that right Tim. The Vario is a small onboard electronic device that measures lift, sink, & more, and relays it to the flyer on the field via a walkie-talkie. The device is very sensitive and was quite impressive. I am not sure but I think it computes his taxes as well.
Mark Johnson displayed his new Zagi ‘Fix’. This is the new electric powered flying wing from Zagi he is selling in his store for $100. Make sure to talk to Mark if you are interested in picking one up or want more information about this very nice ship.
Emil Weiler showed off his new 60” Hyper by Art Hobby. This ship has very clean lines and features an interesting wing that folds down for easy transport. The outboard panels pull out and fold back over the center section. Very slick Emil, thanks.
Robert Olson displayed his Fun One with an interesting cruciform tail. Nice work Robert.
Ib Jensen showed off his new Mark’s Model Zipper, or should we say Zibber? This ship featured very tight, continuous elevon hinges that work very well. Very nice work Ibber!, I mean Ib.
Vern Bailey displayed Mark Miller’s new drawings of Mark Drela’s Bubble Dancer. Say that twice. Mark is planning to kit the Bubble Dancer. Check out Mark’s products at www.isthmusmodels.com
